Which IFS Program is Right for You?

Do you want to learn more about IFS as a professional or to use it for your personal growth? Many people have seen the different programs we offer and asked me to help them figure out which one is best for them. Therefore, I have written this brief article to help with this. Chose the option(s) that best fit your situation.

You are a Therapist, Coach, or Helping Professional

You are new to IFS and want to learn something about it.
See the options under “You are new to IFS” below for regular people. Many therapists also take these courses. In addition, Bonnie offers a Videoconference Basic IFS Course that is set up to work for Australians but is open to everyone.

You are familiar with IFS and want to learn more.
You have two options:

  1. Take one of my Advanced IFS Classes. In these classes, you learn IFS techniques and understandings that go beyond the Basic Course, and you pair up for practice sessions with other members of the class. Some of the classes are for professionals only and include time for short case consultations and teaching about professional topics. Other classes are a mix of therapists and regular folks. The prerequisite is the Basic IFS Course or equivalent.
  1. If the class schedule doesn’t work for you and you have read Self-Therapy, read Self-Therapy, Vol. 2 and Self-Therapy, Vol. 3. *

You are in Australia and want to learn more about IFS.
You have two options:

  1. Bonnie offers a Videoconference Basic IFS Course that is set at a time that works for Australians.
  1. Bonnie offers professional IFS workshops in Sydney and Melbourne, both Beginning and Deepening Workshops. The Videoconference Course or the Beginning Workshop will prepare you for the Deepening Workshop.

You are familiar with IFS and want professional training in IFS.
The only professional training in IFS is offered by the Center for Self-Leadership. Their trainings are very good. However, if you can’t afford their trainings or you can’t get to one, you can learn quite a bit about IFS through my Advanced IFS Classes (see above), as long as you realize that this isn’t professional training and won’t lead to IFS certification.

You are using IFS with your clients and want case consultation.
I have an IFS consultation/training group that includes not only case consultations but also demonstration IFS sessions with volunteers from the group. Bonnie and I both offer individual IFS case consultation.

You want to use IFS to work on interpersonal issues.
Join my Interactive Therapists’ Group. You work directly on how you are interacting with the other group members and your relationships with them. You speak for your parts in the moment. The group includes some training for those leading Interactive Groups.

You are a Regular Person

You want to learn to do IFS sessions on yourself.
If you want to actually learn how to do IFS on your own or through IFS peer counseling, you have a number of options:Y

1 . You are New to IFS.
You have these options.

a.  If you are self-motivated and like to read, Self-Therapy might be enough. It is manual for IFS. * You can try using it to work on yourself and see how it goes. If it turns out that you need more help, go to b.

b.  If you want more help learning IFS and a place to find partners for the work, or if you aren’t into reading, then take our Basic IFS Course. This can be done in two ways.

i.  The Videoconference Basic IFS Course is six two-hour meetings. It includes demonstration IFS sessions with volunteers from the class, and you pair up for practice sessions with other members of the class.

ii. If the schedule or price of this course doesn’t work for you, take the recorded version of the Basic IFS Course. *

2.  You are familiar with IFS.
If you want to learn more about how to use IFS to work on yourself, you have these options:

a.  Take one of my Advanced IFS Classes. In these ongoing classes, you learn IFS techniques and understandings that go beyond the Basic Course, there are demonstration IFS sessions with volunteers from the class, and you pair up for practice sessions with other members of the class. The prerequisite is the Basic IFS Course or equivalent, and you must do the homework exercises.

b.  If the Advanced Class schedule doesn’t work or you don’t want an ongoing class, the follow-up to the Basic IFS Course is the IFS Exiles Course, which is also a six-week Videoconference Course and has a recorded version.

c.  If you don’t want a class or can’t fit it in your schedule, read Self-Therapy, Vol. 2 and Self-Therapy, Vol. 3. *

3.  You want to learn IFS to work on your Inner Critic.
If you want to learn how to do IFS on Inner Critic parts (whether you are familiar with IFS or not), then you have two options:

a.  If you are self-motivated and like to read, Freedom from Your Inner Critic might be enough. * It teaches you how to use IFS on Inner Critic parts, though it doesn’t go into as much detail as Self-Therapy. You can try using it to work on yourself and see how it goes. If it turns out that you need more help, go to b.

b.  If you want more help learning IFS and a place to find partners for the work, or if you aren’t a big reader, then take our Videoconference Inner Critic Course.

You want to use IFS.
IF you prefer to use IFS to work on your issues without learning how to do it on your own, you have these options.

  1. If you are good with computers and are self-motivated, use Self-Therapy Journey, a web program for personal growth based on IFS and the Pattern System. You can choose an issue to work on and then be led through a series of steps for exploring and changing it, including recorded guided meditations that take you through IFS sessions
  2. You can join my IFS  group.
  3. If you have serious trauma in your history, I recommend that you do individual IFS therapy. The ways of doing IFS on you own are unlikely to work for you.
  4. If you can afford individual IFS therapy, it is the best way to do deep sustained IFS work, and it can be combined with the various self-therapy options listed above. The Center for Self-Leadership has a listing of IFS therapists by location, and Bonnie Weiss and I also do individual IFS sessions. If you can’t find someone local, IFS can be done by phone or Skype as well.
