New Format: Online Basic IFS Course

We have had a hard time this fall finding enough people who could meet at the scheduled time for the regular IFS Basic Course. So I decided to offer the Basic IFS Course in this new format.

The Basic IFS Course teaches you how to access Self and work with protectors. It is the most basic course on IFS. It teaches you how to work on yourself using IFS and how to do peer IFS counseling with other people in the class. Therapists and coaches also take the class to learn about IFS, though it is not professional training in IFS.

The course is experiential; it includes practicing IFS sessions for homework in pairs. The text for the course is Self-Therapy.

IFS-Basic-CourseFormat

This is a six-week course that uses the recorded IFS Course from our online store. You work together with a group of people who are working through the recorded course and pairing with each other for the homework practices.

There will be an online forum for you to communicate with the other members of the class and with me. I will be available through the forum, or by phone, to answer any questions that come up.

This format is ideal for people who can’t make the time that is scheduled for the regular Basic IFS Course or who want to take it when there isn’t a regular Basic Course scheduled.

Dates: Week of Oct. 26 – week of Nov. 30
Cost: $15 plus the recorded course, which is $75.

Email me at earley.jay@gmail.com if you would like to take this course.

In the Advanced Ongoing IFS Classes you learn advanced techniques and understandings that go beyond what I teach in the Basic and Exiles Courses. In addition, the whole group works together on important psychological issues such as procrastination, the inner critic, depression, eating issues, and many more. Therapists also have a chance for advanced training and consultation on IFS. I taught a class like this that ran for about five years and was very successful.

Format. The classes meet twice a month for two hours by video-conference. Each class includes teaching, lots of sharing and discussion, demonstration IFS sessions where I work with a volunteer from the class, and experiential group exercises. You pair up with each other between classes to practice doing IFS sessions with each other.

Professionals. Therapists and coaches (and other helping professionals) are welcome in the classes and some classes are all or mostly professionals. For those classes, we will engage in activities aimed primarily at professionals (see below). These classes are approved by the Center for Self-Leadership for IFS CE credit.

What is IFSWhat is IFS?

Click here to watch an interview of Jay Earley about IFS by Tami Simon of Sounds True. Scroll down under What is IFS to see the video. Many people have told me how much this interview helped them to understand IFS.

Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) is a powerful form of individual therapy developed by Richard Schwartz, PhD, which has been spreading rapidly around the U.S. and the world. It is user-friendly, spiritually-oriented, and very effective in working with a wide variety of psychological issues.

IFS sees the mind as made up of sub-personalities, called parts, which are related to each other in an inner system.  Parts often get into conflicts with each other and act in dysfunctional ways in an attempt to protect us from pain. All of this happens largely outside our awareness, and when we do see what is happening, we frequently try to banish the parts that are causing the difficulties. Yet this is hardly ever solves the problem. IFS, on the other hand, teaches us to relate to our parts with openness, curiosity, and compassion, not judgment, which allows each part to reveal its hidden agenda and the pain it defends against.  This paves the way for healing and transformation, which can be accomplished by following the procedure taught in this course.

This course teaches you how to access Self and work with protectors. You learn how to work on yourself using IFS and how to do peer IFS counseling with other people in the class. Therapists and coaches also take the class to learn about IFS. The course is experiential; it includes practicing IFS sessions for homework in pairs, group exercises, and demonstration IFS sessions with volunteers from the class.

The course will be taught by videoconference, so we can see each other, which enhances the group connection, making it safe for you to be open and vulnerable in class. Click here for more information about the course.

What people are saying

I have taken tons of teleclasses and Jay’s was organized really well. Some classes are healing, but you don’t take it with you. Jay’s had both deep transformation and learning that made it easy to keep going afterward. It was an excellent course, I really loved it.

Advanced Ongoing IFS Class

Last week I finished teaching an Inner Critic Course and an IFS Exiles Course. Quite a few of the people want to continue, so I have decided to offer an Advanced Ongoing IFS Class.

The Advanced Ongoing IFS Class will meet twice a month for two hours over the telephone. Each class will include some teaching from me, lots of sharing and discussion, demonstration IFS sessions, where I work with a volunteer from the class, and some experiential group exercises. You will pair up with each other between classes to practice doing IFS sessions with each other. This is a very important part of the class, and people tell me how much they get from working with each other.

The class will be similar to my 6-week classes, except that it will be ongoing and meet every other week. This means that once you join the class, you are responsible for attending each meeting (unless you are ill or on vacation) until you leave. This also means that we will have a chance to develop a really close knit, connected group, which will make it safe for people to be vulnerable with each other. I taught a class like this that ran for about five years and was very successful.

Each class will be recorded, so if you have to miss, you can listen to the recording.

There are many important IFS techniques and understandings that I can cover in the class. These include:

  • Resolving polarization
  • Managers and firefighters
  • Working with anger and disowned anger
  • Negotiating for Self-leadership
  • Working with legacy burdens
  • Working with and transforming Inner Critic parts
  • Disowned parts
  • Protector subparts of exiles
  • Somatic IFS
  • Critters (entities)
  • Guides
  • Internal patterns that come up in doing IFS work

In addition, the class will cover how to work with specific psychological topics, such as the following:

  • Transform psychological issues, such as procrastination, depression, shyness, anxiety, eating issues, addictions, perfectionism, etc.
  • Working through interpersonal patterns such as people-pleasing, passive-aggressive, victim, controlling, rebel, judgmental, etc.
  • Healing emotional wounds from childhood such as shame, abandonment, being judged, guilt, feeling unlovable, feeling worthless, etc.
  • Developing healthy capacities such as love, personal power, self-confidence, life purpose, flow, creativity, peace, vitality, clarity/organization, contributing to social transformation, etc.

The specific topics will depend on your interests and desires.

When dealing with certain topics, such as procrastination or eating issues, it is very helpful to pair up with someone from the class to not only do IFS sessions but also to support each other in making changes in your behavior. This will be an important part of the class.

There will be two different classes, both on Wednesdays.

Class 1: First and third Wednesdays of each month

Class 2: Second and fourth Wednesdays of each month

Both Classes:
Time: 4:30-6:30 pm pacific time (7:30-9:30 eastern)
Cost: $50/session, which is $100/month

The prerequisite for the class is my Basic IFS Course or equivalent. If you want to join but haven’t yet taken the Basic Course, there is a recorded version available in our online store at https://personal-growth-programs.com/products/product-category/courses/ifs-basic-course/. Once you take this course, you can join the Advanced Class. Make sure that you do the experiential homework for the course (preferably with a partner).

Click here to enroll. Go right to step 3 where you can pay by check, PayPal, or credit card.

IFS Exiles Phone Course Starts May 20

Exiles-Course-Fran-childDuring the IFS Exiles course, you learn how to safely access young wounded parts (exiles), how to stay in Self, how to develop a healing relationship with your exiles and how to unburden the pain and negative beliefs they carry so they are transformed and can be free to be their natural, healthy selves.

The IFS Exiles course, combined with the IFS Basic Course, enables you to do a complete IFS session with yourself or a partner. You also learn how to facilitate a partner who is working on themselves.

Prerequisite: IFS Basic Course or equivalent

Wednesdays
May 20 – June 24 (6 two-hour classes)
4:30-6:30 PM pacific time (7:30-9:30 PM eastern)
Cost: $250

Telephone Course: Transforming Your Inner Critic Using IFS

The Inner Critic is the part of you that judges you, pushes you, and undermines your self-confidence.

It can make you feel worthless, ashamed, guilty, depressed, or inadequate. Actually, you probably have more than one Inner Critic part, each of which judges you for something different or in a different way. Bonnie Weiss and I have studied how to best work with these difficult parts using IFS in order to transform them into inner allies.

Transforming your Inner CriticThese Inner Critic parts aren’t quite what they seem to be. They are actually trying to help and protect you even though their effect is to harm you. In this course, you will learn how to work with your Inner Critics using IFS to make friends with them and then transform them. You will learn about other parts that arise along with the Inner Critic:

  • The Criticized Child, which is hurt by the Critic
  • The Inner Defender, which fights the Critic
  • The Inner Rebel, which defies the Critic.

You will learn about the seven types of Inner Critic parts and discover which ones are the most harmful to you—the Taskmaster, Perfectionist, Inner Controller, Underminer, Guilt Tripper, Conformist, and Destroyer.

You will learn how to discover the exiles (wounded inner child parts) that are being protected by your Inner Critic and how to heal them in order to free up your Critic from its judgmental job. You will discover how to develop your Inner Champion, which is the healthy part of you that can support and encourage you in the face of Inner Critic attacks.

The course will include reading, lecture, discussion, group exercises, and homework where you practice IFS work in pairs with other people from the class.

Tuesdays, May 5 – June 9 (6 two-hour classes)
4:30-6:30PM pacific time (7:30-9:30PM eastern)
Cost: $250

Each class will be recorded so you can listen to any that you miss.

For more information attend the Inner Critic webinar this Tuesday (see above), or click here to get the replay of a longer webinar on IFS and the Inner Critic.

Ongoing Advanced IFS Phone Class for Professionals

IFS Basic CourseI have really been enjoying teaching the last two IFS phone courses for therapists, coaches, and other helping professionals. And the participants have enjoyed them so much that a many wanted to continue. They especially appreciated how much they go from pairing with each other for practice sessions.

Since I have a lot more interesting advanced IFS techniques and understandings to teach, I would like to extend this in an ongoing way.

Therefore, I will be teaching an ongoing advanced IFS class for professionals by teleconference. This class will meet twice a month. It will be similar to the other classes in that the first hour will be for questions and teaching, and the second hour for a demo session. And people will pair up with each other by phone between sessions to practice IFS. Since this is a morning class in CA, it will be in the evening for Europeans.

First Hour

  1. Check-in, including sharing what happened during the practice sessions.
  2. Questions that came up during practice or on reflecting on the previous week’s teaching.
  3. Consultations on your clients.
  4. Questions about applying IFS with clients.

Second Hour

  1. Demo IFS session with a volunteer from the class working with me.
  2. Demo IFS session with one participant volunteering to be the therapist for someone else in the class. I supervise you as the session progresses as well as discussing it afterwards. I have done this before, and it is an excellent learning opportunity, not only for the person volunteering but for the whole class.

Day: First and third Fridays of each month (unless we reschedule for vacations)
Time: 10am – 12 noon pacific time (1-3 pm eastern)
Cost: $50/session
Starts: Friday, May 15, 2015

Each class will be recorded so you can listen to any that you miss.

Call Jay at 415-924-5256 or email Jay at earley.jay@gmail.com to discuss joining the class or to enroll.
